How do I get the tax deduction?
Upon request, we can provide you with a tax deductible receipt that reflects the fair market value of the items donated. The deduction is through SEUplift.
Can I contribute coupons for my business?
Unless the coupons are gift certificate style (i.e.: $5 off any purchase), we cannot accept coupons. Because our project is sponsored by SE Uplift (a 501 (c) 3 charitable entity) we are restricted from doing any advertising for businesses, rather, we'd like to partner with our neighborhood establishments to offer new neighbors gifts; gift cards, small items such as seed packets or locally blended tea, etc. When an item is donated we are able to acknowledge (vs advertise) the contribution publicly through our social media, listserv, etc. and offer a tax deduction; providing benefits for businesses who participate in the project. However, if a coupon is attached to the gift, we are allowed to distribute this because the coupon is essentially the label letting the new neighbors know where the gift came from.
How many items or how long must I participate?
This is entirely up to each business owner. We don't want to burden anyone and have no expectations for length of participation. Perhaps this is something you want to do once a year and have a limit for how many items you donate? We plan to check in with each business owner to make sure this is beneficial for everyone. We seek to connect our new neighbors with their immediate resources and local businesses are included in these resources. However, if this project is not a good fit, we have many more opportunities for you to get involved with the folks living in the neighborhood so ask us about other opportunities!
This page will continue to grow as we receive more questions, so feel free to send any questions you have!
