Creston-Kenilworth Neighborhood Walkabout

Join us on Saturday, December 14th, at 1:45pm in the parking lot on Powell Blvd and 35th Ave (the former Original Taco House site). We will stroll along Powell Boulevard from 35th Ave to 28th Ave, and then along Gladstone St from 28th Ave to 37th Ave. Stops along the tour will include the former Original Taco House Center (currently under major renovation), the Oregon Buddhist Temple, proposed Home Forward residential development at 3000 SE Powell Blvd, a free coffee tasting at Starbucks, Jolene’s First Cousin Buildings and The Unicorn Bake Shop, the Community Music Center, and ending at Gladstone St. Pizza as they celebrate 15 years in business. We will be joined by State Representative Rob Nosse, a PBOT pedestrian safety representative, and Oregon Walks.
Itinerary:
1.45 PM - Assemble in the parking lot of the old Original Taco House property on SE Powell. Mark New, the developer, will discuss the property and the redevelopment process.
2:00 PM - Arrive at the Buddhist Temple. We will be greeted in the chapel by Reverend Yuki Sugahara, and hear about the history of the temple, the location and the community.
2:15 PM - Walk to 3000 SE Powell Boulevard. Julie Livingston from Home Forward will talk about the proposed development of the 5-story residential project.
2:25 PM - Walk to Hopworks. Speak with Brandie Ettinger, co-owner of Hopworks.
2:35 PM - Head to Starbucks. Brittney Sanders, Starbucks Manager, will host a coffee tasting event for us. During this time, Sharon White from PBOT will discuss pedestrian safety and guidelines as they relate to SE Powell Blvd.
3:00 PM - Head South on SE 28th Avenue towards SE Gladstone. Along the way, we will talk about Catholic Charities, and Jess Thompson from Oregon Walks will talk about her organization.
3:25 PM - Arrive at Jolene’s First Cousin for a brief update on the status of this development. We will also meet Carrie Padian Teller, owner of Unicorn Bake Shop, which will be opening there this spring.
3:35 PM - Walk towards C-Bar. Owner, Jeremiah Smith, will talk about the history of this restaurant in the CKNA neighborhood.
3:45 PM - Continue east on SE Gladstone and talk about this historic streetcar route, new development and future development potential.
4:00 PM - Arrive at the Music Center. There we will learn about the history and the current programming of the center.
4:25 PM - Visit with Hector Zamora, proprietor of Cafe Zamora on SE Gladstone.
4:35 PM - Arrive at Gladstone Street Pizza. At this time, we will hear from our Oregon State Representative, Rob Nosse, as we share in the celebration of Gladstone Street Pizza’s 15th Anniversary! This will also be a time for the group to discuss their thoughts on Inner SE Powell Blvd.

Clean Up Day

Bring all your bulky, hard-to-dispose-of household waste, scrap wood, tires, unwanted furniture, and small appliances. Metal, paper, plastic, and glass will be recycled. #6 plastics and #6 block styrofoam must be separated out for recycling. Reusable household items such as furniture, kitchen tools, linens, clothes, and children's toys will be donated to the Community Warehouse. Cost per load size: $20 for a small load (a car- or sedan-full); $30 for a medium load (a small pick-up truck full); $40 for a large load (a large pick-up or van-full. Price for larger loads negotiable on site.
