Community Preparedness and Resilience

This committee’s purpose is to promote individual, family, and community preparedness and resilience. It seeks to coordinate with the City of Portland Neighborhood Emergency Team (NET), other neighborhoods, volunteer organizations, local businesses & residents to provide resources in support of this purpose.
While we need to able to respond to, and recover from, a variety of possibilities including storms, flooding, power outages and temperature extremes; by far the most demanding will be a Cascadia Subduction Zone Earthquake. Although known by the scientific community for decades, the potential of this disaster was largely brought into public consciousness by an article in The New Yorker Magazine in 2015. History has shown that, in a major earthquake, people are most often rescued and cared for by their own neighbors, since professional emergency services are initially overwhelmed. The ability of neighbors to perform these duties safely and effectively is directly related to their previous training and preparation. Hopefully, the resources provided here will help you to begin or improve upon your preparedness. Knowing your neighbors and having strong connections with them is another critical factor in survival and recovery.
